Neighborhoods in Downtown Charleston

Downtown Charleston is brimming with culture, history, and fantastic restaurants. But have you ever wondered about the lesser known neighborhoods surrounding the downtown area? We’ve made it easy for you by rounding up some of the neighborhoods and local restaurants and bars that should definitely be on your to-do list!

Hampton Park Terrace

Located along the beautiful Hampton Park, this neighborhood is full of historic homes and beautiful tree lined streets. Many of the homes were constructed between 1912 and 1925 and the architecture is unique to the area. It’s a distinctive break from the traditional Charleston single family home.

Harold’s Cabin

Wagner Terrace

The neighborhoods of Wagener Terrace, Longborough and Lowndes Point, are often collectively referred to as Wagener Terrace. Most of the area homes were built in the 1920s – 1960s and a revitalization began in 2004. This neighborhood is incredibly close to restaurants, shopping, and Hampton Park.

West Side Phase 1 & 2

Home to the Joseph P. Riley Baseball Stadium (known affectionately as “The Joe”), theCitadel, and Brittlebank Park. The Westside of the peninsula is booming and new mixed use apartments with restaurants and shopping will be completed in 2018 / 2019.

Cannonborough / Elliotborough

In the last ten years, Cannonborough and Elliotborough have seen a significant amount of revitalization. Old homes have been renovated and new apartments and homes have been built. This quiet neighborhood is known for its secret gardens that you’ll find hidden in alcoves and on side streets.

Nestled next to MUSC, Radcliffborough is populated with doctors and students that attend the medical university. With close proximity to the hospital you’re also a short bike ride from upper King Street and easy access to the Crosstown.

Harleston Village Phase 1 & 2

Harleston Village is one of the most diverse and lively neighborhoods in downtown Charleston. With its center point at Colonial Lake and Moultrie Park, you’ll find multitudes of people enjoying the beautiful lake on sunny days. Just a short walk to the City Marina and King Street, Harleston Village is rich with historic homes.
